ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA

This is a theoretical design for the University of Michigan’s Power Center for the Performing Arts. With this play, I was inspired to have a more abstract set that could be used for multiple scenes at a time, since there is little to no time for any scene transitions. To me, Antony and Cleopatra is about the slow yet inevitable fall of Egypt, and by that measure, any opposing forces to Caesar. My set plays into this lack of hope by having a large larger-than life painting of “The Death of Cleopatra” by Juan Luna slowly coming down to crush the Egyptian/Syrian landscape. The painting also serves as a rake in Act 3 for dynamic battle scenes, and its cutouts can be used for lighting effects and scene isolations.
